Lake Taupo

So after a few days in Rotorua, we headed south for the Waitomo caves. MOAR GLOW WORMS!! We did enjoy ourselves on this tour but found that it wasn’t as good as the night before on the lake and it’s really no surprise, you can’t compare a private tour with one surrounded by 30 other tourists.

So we actually visited two caves, Ruakuri and the Waitomo glow worm cave. Ruakuri cave was big and made us cold and gave us sore feet, but it was beautiful. Here, look:

The glow worm cave was not as impressive in size, but then we were guided onto a boat in the dark and asked to be wery wery quiet. Then we sailed in he deep cavern and around a corner the cavern was lit brilliantly blue with glow worms. We couldn’t take photos, but his marketing material is a good representation of what we saw.

After the caves we made our way to another big lake, Lake Taupo.
Nobody told us before we got there, but we found out ourselves that the lake was a lovely lukewarm baby bath temperature, hence the steam in the photo below. We spent just one night here as a stopover. Had a delicious dinner looking out over the lake at Dixie Browns. Then went back to the hotel and passed out halfway through a movie. Here’s some photos to prove we were there.
