Part 2: Food In Houston

Posted by in Travel, USA

SO MUCH FOOD, I don’t even know where to start. I even considered making this a picture book post to get my message across for those of us who are visual learners… However, that would lead to too much uncomfortable drooling all over your keyboard so. I’ll keep the food porn to a minimum.

I’ve been here for 3.5 weeks now and during that time I have experienced a variety of foods. Fast Foods, Restaurant Foods, Sweet Foods, Convenience Foods, Grocery Store Foods, the list goes on.  Two main things come to mind when I think about the food here.

 1. Food is cheap
2. In Texas, there’s TEX-MEX

1. The food is cheap: My jaw dropped when I realised how much I could get for a buck! I felt like a kid in a candy store once again. It reminded me of my childhood. When every Thursday my cousin and I would go shopping with Nan and receive $5 reward to spend on whatever we liked. ($5 bought a lot back then!) We get fed extremely well at class each day in a large dining hall with about 8 different dining options and $12 to spend. Most days, I spend $8 on a fulfilling lunch, drink and a dessert then spend the remainder on chocolate bars to bring home. I stopped counting a while ago, but I have in the range of 15-20 snacks waiting for Mark in my suitcase. It’s not just that it’s cheap, but you get a lot. Most single serve meals I have ordered have had enough food on the plate to feed me for 3 dinners. Thankfully, the good Texas folks don’t have a problem with Doggy Bags.

2. In Texas, there’s TEX-MEX: You don’t have to trek far from my hotel to see the wonderful influence Mexico has had on it’s close neighbour Texas. If you are not aware already I LOVE MEXICAN FOOD. Eggs in the morning have capsicum scrambled in with them and in case you like a spicy breakfast there is a bowl of jalapeños available for topping off your morning meal. I only have to walk 4 minutes for a burrito and a Texas BBQ meal generally includes Tex-Mex beans of some variety.

There’s a few things I have found I really like. Texas Sweet BBQ Sauce, Blueberry Bagels & Cherry Dr Pepper to name a few.  However, there’s also been some things which have disagreed with my taste-buds. For example, they drink a lot of filtered Coffee here. You know, the weak watery type? (Blergh!) I’ve been occasionally making a break for the Starbucks when I find one to make me a nice espresso latte.

I’m only willing to make one more negative judgement on American food in this post, would not like to make too many complaints and lose a friend. It completely perplexes me why their bread tastes the way it does. Imagine you’re about to enjoy a nice hot soup, rich and creamy, you’ve got your bread or toast (depending on your persuasion) buttered & ready. You dip it into your soup, take a nice big bite and… ew… Oh… wait, what happened? So you taste the soup again on it’s own with your eyes flinching… but nope, soup’s pretty good. You start staring at the bread, wondering what type you bought… is there something wrong with the butter? Nope, tasted fine on the potatoes… So  you check the bread packet… “Yep, definitely bought whole grain sand-which bread”

THEN WHY DOES IT TASTE LIKE CAKE!?!?!

Ok, I may be over reacting… but really, their bread here is sweet. I’ve tried grain bread, rye bread, wholemeal bread all of it has a very distinct sugary taste. I’m guessing that’s just the way they like it and hell, who am I to say. It’s just an unusual taste which makes a sand which or a bowl of soup slightly sickening by the 3rd or 4th bite… In my opinion… and opinion only. Each to their own, I am loving experiencing these new foods and learning about my fellow earth dwellers.

Ok, enough talking. Here’s some pictures. I recommend you glad wrap your key board before continuing  especially if you are prone to drooling in any other circumstances, you know.. like sleeping.
