Buried Village, Te Wairoa

Posted by in New Zealand

This is the story of a small village which suffered the wrath of the nearby Mount Terawara which erupted on June 10th 1886. The small village on display shows the excavated ruins of the village, including some reconstructed ‘whares’ or traditional Maori houses.

I’m going to take this moment to educate everyone on the correct pronunciation of Maori, as we ourselves have recently learned that we have been saying it wrong all our lives and I’m pretty sure you have too. I think most Aussies say Maori like,

MAO = as in Chinese communist revolutionary, Chairman Mao.

RI = as in ‘read’
When actually, we should be saying it like this.

MA = as in ‘grandma’
O = as in ‘often’
RI = as in ‘read’
So, there ya go!

Here’s some pictures of us gallivanting around at Buried Village.
