Donna with a Lizard – Walking home from work in Houston.

Hi, Remember me? It’s been a while. Oh yea, that’s me. Picking up ‘wild’ animals again. Just a small lizard on my way home from the Houston Office. But that’s nothing compared to the Gorilla I caught in Denver, just wait and see.

So I flew out from Houston on Friday night and landed in the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado to catch up with my good friend Paul. After all, I couldn’t come so far to miss out on that! Since the weekend was so successful and much laughter was had by all, I thought I’d share my recipe for enjoyment. Here’s what you need.

Gorilla Donna

A Gorilla Suit: Yep, that’s me as a gorilla. Paul and I decided to participate in the Annual Denver Gorilla Run. 5Km through Denver City and oh what a beautiful city it is. I needn’t mislead you though… we didn’t run. We strolled but I’m told all 790 of the gorilla’s still alive in the world today appreciated our effort none the less and so they  bloody should, I didn’t walk 5KM for nothing.

Despite the air being very thin in Denver, I managed to complete the course. Then we sat as two happy gorillas at the local bar and ate lunch. Oh and Gorilla’s REALLY like Spicy Thai salad after a 5KM walk. If you want to learn more about the mountain gorillas you can click here to read up or to Donate.

Denver was chilly, but not as bad as I had been warned. It was also beautiful as there was snow covered trees and houses in the neighbourhood. Oh and don’t get me started on the squirrels. They were everywhere and I took extreme delight in photographing nearly every one I saw. Paul was tired of this by the end of the weekend. He was also slightly concerned for their safety as I seemed to be stalking each one I saw.

A Bar Tender: On Saturday night I was treated to an uber trendy underground bar whereby we were assigned a bartender to create wonderful concoctions for us based on our taste preferences. It was a great experience, although potentially regretful saying to the bartender “I like fruity & creamy drinks” Then you’re wondering if you’ve just suggested the worst drink ever like a kiwifruit, goats milk and Vodka Lemonade. Fortunately… He was wiser than I, he made me a few very refreshing cocktails.

At this stage I had enough to drink to consider trying the good old American ‘Pumpkin Pie.’ So the pumpkin pie was actually pretty good, I just had some pre-conceived biases that Pumpkin was a savoury food item which shouldn’t be served in Pie format. Putting my differences aside though I was able to bloat myself enough that one more bite would have torn the stitching from my dress.

Cabaret: Another important ingredient in the recipe for a fun weekend. What better time to do cabaret than during Halloween celebration week as it wasn’t your traditional cabaret. Medusa, an Egyptian Mummy and a Sea Monster were part of the acts but this made their acts fun, creepy and very entertaining. Naughty Pierre our host for the evening kept us giggling all night. So I took an opportunity to get a picture with the local stars.

Well just a brief review of my fun weekend in Denver. I didn’t want to leave. I have a few more follow up posts planned on some other things the weekend involved. But for now it’s late in Houston and I’m full of Tex Mex Baked Potato, so I’m off to fall into a food coma for now. More updates coming soon…
